Machine Works

Located in Northwest Portland’s quickly developing and popular Pearl District, this project involves the rehabilitation of an existing 24,000 sq.ft. concrete tilt-up building into a dramatic 42,000 sq.ft. building with office and retail spaces. A new second floor will be added to increase floor area while new windows are to be cut into the existing bare concrete walls for an essentially brand new facade. Oval in plan, with vertically skewed translucent walls, the new central atrium will bring natural light and excitement into the building’s core. The design, detailing, and name–Machine Works–serve to recall the building’s former life as a machine shop.
